Student headhunted by BBC 6

A twenty-one year old student from Newport has been hired by the BBC to present the 6 Music chart show each Sunday from 2pm. Philippa Treverton-Jones, who calls herself Philippa TJ on-air will jump from University Radio Nottingham to the chart show, replacing Andrew Collins.

Lesley Douglas, Controller, Radio 2 and 6 Music, says: "6 Music has worked closely with the Student Radio Association for the past 5 years to support the development of new talent and so I'm delighted that one of its rising stars is taking over the Chart Show.

"Philippa is a natural radio broadcaster with a clear passion for music and will bring a freshness to the overall Sunday proposition."

During her time on student radio, Philippa, who grew up in Newport, Gwent, has won five Gold Student Radio Awards, and is looking forward to joining a national station: "6 Music's a big leap from student radio but I think I'll bring something new to the schedule. Hopefully this will open further doors for me in the radio industry."

At the same time, comedian Stephen Merchant is to start hosting his own Sunday show as part of a new schedule.
