Two apply for Hereford DAB

Ofcom has received two applications for the Herefordshire & Worcestershire local digital radio multiplex licence. They are MuxCo Hereford and Worcester Limited, and Now Digital Ltd. MuxCo investors include Murfin Media and Town and Country Broadcasting. Now Digital is fully owned by GCap Media.

Both applications propose a mixture of services, including local services from Wyvern FM and Sunshine Radio, plus UCB UK and a local traffic and travel service.

MuxCo Hereford & Worcester is lead by Gregory Watson, the former Corporate Development Director at GCAP Media plc. The vision of the company is to provide opportunities for local companies to participate in DAB digital radio and to enhance local radio listening through investment in new services.

Gregory Watson says “DAB is the industry’s chosen digital radio platform. After the introduction of national, regional and big city digital multiplexes, it is exciting that other parts of the UK are now being given the opportunity to listen to an enhanced range of radio services. MuxCo enables smaller operators to have the opportunity to participate in ownership and production in this crucial stage of local radio development. DAB penetration in is increasing significantly and we feel that Herefordshire and Worcestershire will welcome the proposed range of new services, which alongside the very popular existing services, delivers a unique strategy for the region.”

Muff Murfin, Managing Director of the Old Smithy Recording Studios and of Murfin Media, says “Digital radio offers a considerable increase in the scope and range of radio services, not just for existing players but to everyone, from students and community groups to government bodies. We believe that our proposals will be warmly welcomed across the region, enabling many new sounds and voices to be heard.”

It is anticipated that the licence will be awarded by Ofcom in October 2007.
