Big John sky-high after 10 years

Hallam FM's Big John at Breakfast has celebrated 10 years on air with a 4-hour marathon show live from the air.

John did what the station are calling the world's first radio show going round and round – inside the 200ft high Wheel of Sheffield.

Each stomach turning spin raising money for Hallam FM’s Cash For Kids, all live on air.

Among the other crazy things on the show this week to celebrate a decade of the show were Big John sticking his face in a tank of skin-eating fish and toasting the occasion by drinking a blended concoction of lambs liver and prawns.

He also spent a day strapped to a listener, had a race against time to get round the ‘real life’ Sheffield Monopoly board (with the help of a helicopter!), and then went on to write and perform his own 80s single.

A spokesman for Hallam FM said: "The idea was to turn the tables on Big John and give him a taste of his own medicine after 10-years of winding up South Yorkshire. He was the victim, as some of his biggest stunts return to haunt him, in '10 Years – 10 Tasks'."

Looking back over his decade on Hallam FM, Big John recollects many highlights, including taking the show live around the world, winning gold at the New York Radio Awards and recently celebrating Hallam's title of UK Commercial Radio Station of the Year 2010. John told us: "The celebration for me is an opportunity to thank the audience for listening. Looking back, the things that stand out for me are the things that have involved the audience the most. The charity appeals – for instance, when we replaced the kids playground on the top of Rotherham Hospital. It’s moments like that, which have motivated so many of our listeners to get involved and make a difference – that makes the 10 years seem like an absolute privilege."
