Asian Sound asks to add extra station

East Lancashire AM station Asian Sound has requested a Format change to allow the creation of an extra radio station on one of its two frequencies.

It aims to continue a full service on 963 KHz whilst targeting the Asian Arabic Muslim community on its 1377 kHz frequency.

963 KHz officially covers Preston, Blackburn, Burnley, Rochdale and Bolton whilst 1377 kHz covers the Manchester, Oldham and Stockport areas. The station said: “We believe that the broadcast of the Muslim Lifestyle service will increase the diversity and choice of relevant services available to listeners to analogue radio in the service area of our 1377kHz transmitter.”

The changes would substantially alter the character of service so Ofcom has opened a consultation with a closing date of December 22nd.

Asian Sound won the licence out of four applications in 1995 (three Asian formats and an English service backed by Marcher Sound Group) and is based in Manchester.
