A group of volunteers are planning a new online radio station for the West Country.

West Country Radio plans to launch on August 13th providing local news and content the South West of England.

The station says: “As FM radio figures remain on the decline in many areas, and formerly ‘local’ stations now remote their outputs from central studios such as Milton Keynes and London, West Country Radio promises to bring the LOCAL back to radio, with real personality driven shows and informative programming.

“Staffed entirely by volunteers, the presenters will work from their own homes with some delivering live daily shows, and others recording weekly programmes. Initially the station will be live from 7am to 7pm with news, music, debate, information on events and attractions, traffic and weather.”

The station is aimed at visitors the area and local people, and is asking for more volunteer presenters and sponsors.

Another group of well meaning , if slightly misguided folk….just who is going to listen to them???…and why would you.
I an sick to death of all this bring local radio back to its community brigade…the reason it left in the first place was that MOST of the smaller IR stations were not very good…the world has moved on from selling wardrobes..the pet Vet….lost dogs…nobody is intrested..its a corparate world…its why the High St is dead.

The high street is ‘dead’ because it was full of shoe and clothes shops, and coffee bars selling cups of coffee at £3.50 !

With Respect Len..i am not sure i understand…but the High Street died because we want everything under one roof..and dont want to trapse from place 2 place…but i agree with the comment about coffee!!!!!!!!…and £1-95 for a Chocolate Muffin!!!

@Dan You are the misguided one I think. Local radio left because the ILR model was not financially viable. De-regulation on the part of OfCom meant people could pretty much do what they want and so the big groups brought lots of former ILR stations. Local radio is alive and healthy these days if you know where to look, and there is almost certainly a demand for it.

Extremely GOOD news, and exactly what the UK radio industry needs if “local” radio is to be anything other than a ‘musical blancmange’ from London !
