KCC launches community radio media course

Community station 99.8FM KCC Live has teamed up with Knowsley Community College to deliver a free, nationally recognised qualification in radio.

Set to launch in September 2013, this BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production (Radio) will offer a unique opportunity in gaining the essential skills required for a career in radio and a qualification equivalent to A Levels that will get you ready for a place on a University course.

The course mixes theory elements with much needed practical hands-on experience delivery, and project work from 99.8FM KCC Live, a professional Sony Academy recognised model for community radio with young people in Merseyside that has over 50,000 listeners every week.

The course will include modules in Music Programming, Speech Package Production, Understanding the Radio Industry, Factual Programming, News Production for Radio, and many more.

Candidates will be aged 16-24 with a minimum number of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above and will be expected to dedicate a minimum number of volunteering hours per week to the running of 99.8FM KCC Live as part of their course experience and all-round development in preparation for a career in the radio industry.

The programme also includes work experience placements at some of the most recognised and successful radio stations in the country including Radio City 96.7, Rock FM, BBC 5 Live, and BBC Merseyside.

People who have worked and volunteered at KCC Live have already gone on to freelance work and regular work experience within the wider industry. KCC Live has been broadcasting full-time on FM99.8 since 2008, and over 100 young volunteers currently work on the station each week. It was named Radio Academy NW Regional Station of the Year in 2012.
