UTV eyes up Virgin – again

UTV Radio are thinking about the possibilities of buying Virgin Radio, co-locating the two, and selling airtime on both as one package to advertisers. MD Scott Taunton and CE John Mc-Cann have been talking to FT, also saying they would be interested in Emap's radio stations.

UTV have already tried twice this year to buy Virgin Radio with no success. But the value of the station depends on if Sir Richard Branson allows new owners to use the Virgin name. Under licence terms, if total ownership of the station changes hands, Branson has the right to remove his trademark business name.

Speaking to the Financial Times about buying Virgin, Scott Taunton said: "It is completely deliverable".
