Double community radio launch

Two community radio stations will launch within hours of each other this weekend – and both are in Greater Manchester. Tameside Radio in the Ashton Under Lyne area and Salford City Radio will both go live on Sunday.

Salford City Radio will launch at 11am, and are currently testing on 94.4 FM. Their new logo was designed by a pupil at a local school and are looking forward to serving the city, as Steve Suttie, Station Manager said “It is great that our launch co-incides with the launch of Tameside Radio, and that almost all communities of Greater Manchester will now have their own genuinely local radio service, made for the people, by the people. And to think that it is also the 40th Anniversary of BBC Radio 1 on Sunday as well makes it a very special occasion.”

Simon Walker, Station Manager of 103.6 FM Tameside Radio added “It is quite a privilege to be involved in community radio in Tameside, we have 130 volunteers registered with us, a fantastic blend of music from the last 50 years and we will be providing a service that is unique, Tameside’s first and only radio station.”

Tameside Radio will be officially switched on by Frank Sidebottom at 1:03 and six seconds on Sunday afternoon and it coincides with Ashton’s Farmers Market. The party will be on all day between 11am and 3pm.

Frank Sidebottom said of the event “I am really looking forward to switching Tameside Radio on and contributing on a regular basis on Saturday and Sunday mornings between 7am and 10am, You know I am, I really am, Thank You!”
