New Editor for Radio Foyle

Lancashire-born Michael Tumelty has been appointed as the new editor for BBC Radio Foyle.

He will have responsibility for shaping the development of BBC Radio Foyle's local services and its role as a production base for the wider BBC.

Michael was previously Editor of the Breakfast Show and a senior member of the editorial management team of Dublin-based Newstalk 106-108fm. He established his own independent media consultancy, Different Media, in early 2009.

Prior to that, he spent nine years with the BBC in London working as a senior broadcast journalist in the BBC Radio Newsroom before becoming an Assistant Editor with BBC Radio 5 Live.

Michael was born and educated in Burnley, Lancashire, and at Leeds University, and his family originates from Roscommon and Mayo.

Speaking of his appointment Michael said: "I am delighted to accept this position with BBC Radio Foyle. It's a wonderful opportunity and I look forward to moving to the North West and becoming part of its vibrant and creative community.

"My ambition is to build on the strengths of BBC Radio Foyle and to develop its role at the heart of community and cultural life."
