Live leap year proposal at IOW Radio

Isle of Wight Radio’s Breakfast Show was the scene for one of no doubt many leap year marriage proposals this morning.

A live link to two listeners house mean the audience heard the emotional question being popped on-air.

Listener Sharon Barton contacted the station to see if they could help to make her matrimonial dream come true – and broadcast her proposal to Larry Cowan.

Larry had no idea what was happening but had previously made it clear to Sharon that he would only say “yes” if they had a big audience.

Broadcast journalist and breakfast show co-host, Emily Wells surprised Larry at home at 8.10am and helped Sharon pop the question via a video link. After a little deliberation, Larry said “Yes” followed by applause from everyone present and much to the relief of presenter Paul Topping and News Editor, Michael Coombes, who were both back in the studio.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio a short time after the show, Sharon said, “I had been plucking up the courage for a long time but I knew that Larry wanted a big audience to witness my proposal so my natural choice was Isle of Wight Radio. I am so happy, thank you for helping me out.” Plans are now underway for the wedding which is to take place on 12/12/12.

Claire Willis, MD of Isle of Wight Radio, said, “It felt as if the Island stopped to listen, it was such an incredible moment, thank goodness he said yes!”
