All the winners have been announced for the 2021 ARIAS at an intimate event at the Mayfair Hotel in London.
The evening, which was streamed live to Radio Academy members, was hosted by KISS Breakfast presenters Jordan & Perri.
Guests in the audience included management and staff from some of the companies that entered, along with presenters Scott Mills, Chris Stark, Fleur East, Vanessa Feltz, Lauren Laverne, George the Poet, Melvin Doom, Rickie Haywood Williams and Snoochie Shy.
The BBC took home 16 awards including Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James for Best Music Breakfast Show, with Greg being surprised by his wife Bella Mackie at home via Zoom. He paid respect to all breakfast show presenters around the industry who kept going during the hard times of the pandemic
Also at the BBC, The YUNGBLUD Podcast won Best New Show, Jamz Supernova won Best Music Specialist Show, Poppy Begum got Best New Presenter and George the Poet’s Have You Heard George’s Podcast? won both Best Factual Single Programme and Best Speech Presenter.
Bauer Media radio brands were recognised on the night with Absolute Radio 40s winning the new category Creative Innovation Award and Magic Radio winning Station of the Year as well as Best Commercial Partnership for their collaboration with Netflix on Magic Eurosong.
BBC Radio 1 won Best Station Sound, BBC Newsbeat saw Gold in Best News Coverage, BBC 1Xtra’s The Black Power Playlist won The Impact Award (also new for 2021) and BBC Radio 4 won in four different categories – Best Fictional Storytelling for Eight Point Nine Nine, The Comedy Award for The Skewer, Best Factual Series for The Punch and The 2020 Special Award for Life On Lockdown – another new category for this year.
ARIAS hosts Jordan & Perri were crowned winners of the public-voted Radio Times Moment of the Year for a poignant moment of reflection live on KISS Breakfast following the national reaction to Diversity’s Britain’s Got Talent performance, one that was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
talkSport’s Coming in From The Cold won Gold in Best Sports Show, while talkSport Breakfast took home Best Speech Breakfast Show.
BBC regional station wins include BBC Radio Sheffield claiming Gold for The John Myers Award For Best Local Station and Best Local Radio Show went to BBC Radio Berkshire’s The Andrew Peach Show.
The podcast sector also had a successful night with VENT – VICE & Brent 2020 winning The Grassroots Award, Alan Partridge: From the Oasthouse claiming Best Marketing Campaign, and The Bellingcat Podcast going one better from their Silver Award in 2020 to claim Gold this time around in the Best Independent Podcast category.
