BBC Radio 1 has today announced the name of its new extension, Radio 1 Anthems.
The new service will launch on Friday 8th November 2024 on BBC Sounds, joining an enhanced Radio 1 Dance which commenced earlier this year.
The second extension has also been named as Radio 3 Unwind, which has been mentioned on-air at Radio 3 for the last few weeks.
The third, an oldies version of BBC Radio 2, is still going through a public interest test.
The BBC says: “Radio 1 Anthems will help young audiences discover and re-discover a wide range of music and acts supported by Radio 1 in the 2000s and 2010s with a dedicated focus on growing new on-air and off-air talent.
“The content mix will include existing on-demand content available on BBC Sounds including Radio 1’s Workout Anthems, Radio 1’s Chillout Anthems and Radio 1’s Pop Anthems, and also make use of the extensive Radio 1 archive.
“The brand-new extension will build on Radio 1’s history of successfully spotting and developing young talent into the industry, helping to stimulate the creative sector. New talent will be showcased across the schedule including specific programmes made and hosted by presenters fresh out of student radio.”
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio 1, adds: “Radio 1 Anthems is going to be a great nostalgic trip for our young audience, and to make it happen we’re going to be giving some new opportunities to people from across the UK.
“Radio 1 plays a crucial role in developing new talent for the entire industry, and we can’t wait to bring this new offer for our listeners to enjoy and discover.”
