Carl Kingston, who worked on many radio stations in the UK and around the world, has died following a short illness.
Most recently, Carl was a part of Radio Caroline’s special broadcast for its 60th anniversary.
In a post on Facebook, Carl’s son Andrew said his dad’s passing had come as a huge shock as he was full of life and had much that he was planning to do.
He added: “I know that he had so many friends around the world, very many that we don’t know. He lived for the radio and did what he loved right to the end.
“We all loved him so much and it’s just very hard to process at the moment.
“RIP Dad, you will always be loved and missed by so many.”
From Hull, Carl began his broadcasting career in 1974 on BBC Radio Humberside and this was followed by Radio Caroline, Radio Mi Amigo, The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, The Voice of Peace in Israel, Viking Radio, MAGIC 1380 KSMJ Sacramento California, 99 WSFW FM Seneca Falls New York, Blue Danube Radio in Vienna, Austria, the satellite service The Super Station, 96.3 Aire FM, Hereward FM, Minster FM, Stray FM, BFBS, Home 107.9 and Garrison Radio, Radio Nova in Moldova, Alpha FM, Radio Seagull in Holland, 91 FM Radio Atlanta and Spectrum FM Costa Calida in Spain.
In another post, Stephanie Hirst described her friend Carl as one of her radio heroes and wrote: “Carl kicked the door open for so many of us to have wonderful careers in the world of broadcasting.
“He mentored, nurtured and inspired us, always there for advice. He single handedly taught me how to host a music radio show, how to get from one song to another, using the radio station processing to make it sound HOT with that same energy from U.S. radio which inspired him greatly.
“He did his final show last weekend on his beloved Radio Caroline, for their 60th anniversary weekend, which is incredibly bitter sweet.
“Sending all my love to his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
“Rest in peace Carl, it was a dream come true to become friends with one of my radio heroes.”
