Global teases something new about Global Player

Global is running a teaser campaign on social media regarding a new feature based on Global Player.

The broadcaster is staying tight-lipped about the news, but RadioToday is expecting an announcement as early as next week.

So far the campaign has included images of Global Player with a ‘1’ next to it, followed by a “12” and the words “That’s more like it”.

Observers have speculated many different things so far, from an updated version of the app, to the launch of new stations such as Radio X Oasis and Heart Xmas.

An earlier teaser message said: “Something new for every you…” along with “We’ve been busy creating…”

Radio exec Matt posted that the campaign is ‘a Global Player thing’ when asked about his unrelated tweet, which said some interesting jingle bell ball networking is on the way.

Posters on Digital Spy forums are speculating/hoping for the return of the Galaxy brand, whilst others have posted links to new X usernames for additional decades stations.

One X user said: “The way they’re hyping this, I wonder if King Charles III himself has been signed for Heart Breakfast.”

What we do know is that Global Player is now the official app for all Global radio brands, as individual ones are being retired.

The “12” could be the amount of brands/genres available, made up of Heart, Capital, Smooth, Radio X, LBC, Classic FM, Gold, and… five new ones? Or 12 new splinter brands being launched.

Other guesses include one content stream per brand, à la Absolute Radio, which offers a number of music services with the same shows, or the ability to create a personalised radio service via Global Player based on a Global ID. Such as personal service could allow users to choose the presenter they want (Moyles), with the music they like (70s pop), and news, travel and adverts for a certain area.

Whatever it is, people are talking about it, and I for one can’t wait to find out what’s happening. Watch this space!
