Thanks to the rise of streaming services, most people tune into podcasts to get advice about crypto.
But, public radio has been around in the UK since 1920, and radio shows hold their own when it comes to teaching listeners about crypto, tech, and finance.
People are becoming increasingly interested in cryptocurrencies, but are often unsure of their risks and real-world applications. Crypto can be a sound investment if you’re willing to deal with its volatility, and can be used in retail, travel and entertainment. For example, non-UK casinos often accept crypto deposits and withdrawals in cryptocurrency are faster and more secure.
But knowing how to start your crypto journey can be overwhelming, and these current and past radio shows are the ideal starting point.
Money Box Live on BBC Radio 4 offers a wealth of financial advice, covering topics from budgeting to car finance, as well as an episode on cryptocurrencies. The specific crypto episode aired in January 2021 and discussed the risks and benefits of investing in cryptocurrencies. This episode can be found on BBC’s website. It is the perfect starting point for those interested in – and tempted by – crypto.
Also airing in 2021 was BBC’s Digital Planet episode titled “Bitcoin’s environmental cost”. This feature focused on the complexities around the energy-intensive process behind Bitcoin mining. Digital Planet is a worthy show to tune into as it covers digital news from across the world.
Radio 4 also features The Bottom Line, a business show hosted by Evan Davis. They often touch on the latest crypto developments, and a 2019 episode simply titled “Cryptocurrencies” delved into the impact of cryptocurrencies on the global banking system.
On BBC Radio 5 you will find a 5 AM show titled “Wake Up to Money”. According to the show’s description, it offers “news and views on business and the world of personal finance. Plus the very latest from the financial markets around the globe.” This show has covered cryptocurrencies in the past in an episode titled “Crypto calamity”. This aired in 2022, following the decrease in the value in particularly Bitcoin. If you’re interested in a broader view of finances and crypto, then Wake Up to Money is a worthwhile show to tune into.
Moving away from BBC programming, shareradio is another useful radio channel to be aware of. This platform has various programmes that offer insights into personal finances and the latest technological innovations, which include cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.
Women who are novices when it comes to financial confidence should turn to WhealthiHer, a programme featuring everything women should know about managing their own money. Each episode focuses on a different topic, from talking about money in relationships to investments (which includes crypto).
Shareradio also has an insightful programme titled “Managing My Money”. The hosts of this show, Glen Goodman and Annie Weston, have made finances fun, using humour and stories to educate the audience.
There is clearly no shortage of radio shows that strive to provide financial and investment advice, including on what cryptocurrency is and how to invest in it. Tune in to any of the UK’s financial or business broadcasts, and you’ll stumble upon someone talking about the rise of crypto and the promise it holds for the future.
