Lockdown radio show still earning nominations five years on

A radio show that began as an emergency COVID-19 lockdown broadcast is celebrating its fifth anniversary today.

When the first lockdown forced the closure of BCfm Radio’s studios in March 2020, broadcaster Tristan B stepped in to present daily emergency shows from his home studio.

What was initially a temporary measure became a permanent fixture, with Lunchtime with Tristan B now regarded as one of the station’s flagship programmes.

Designed as a fast-moving and lighthearted show to counter the challenges of the time, the programme blends a mix of classic and contemporary music, reflecting the diverse audience of Bristol Community FM. Over the years, it has evolved to include Bristol-based event coverage and community news.

Tristan B’s radio career dates back to 1986 when he presented dance music shows on BBC Radio Bristol. His career included stints on BBC television and commercial radio, notably at Galaxy 101, where he became Programme Director in 2000.

After stepping away from broadcasting in 2002, he rediscovered his passion at BCfm in 2012, volunteering to produce and present a variety of shows.

Lunchtime with Tristan B has won a Bronze Award for Entertainment Show of the Year at the 2024 Community Radio Awards and has been nominated for Best Community Radio Show at the upcoming Shoutout Listeners Awards, set to be announced on March 27.

Reflecting on the milestone, Tristan B said: “It was always my dream to be a radio presenter, and I was fortunate to build a career in the industry. When that chapter ended, BCfm gave me the opportunity to continue doing what I love. Presenting live daily shows for the past five years has been a privilege.”

BCfm Charity CEO Pat Hart praised Tristan’s contributions, stating: “Tristan has always inspired me—he was responsible for getting me into radio many years ago. His lunchtime show remains an essential part of Bristol’s radio landscape, offering listeners music, fun, and great company. Bristol has a strong tradition of volunteering, and Tristan embodies that spirit.”
