Radio Caroline features on BBC TV show with visit from Michael Portillo

Radio Caroline has featured on BBC Two’s Great British Railway Journeys with the show’s presenter Michael Portillo visiting the station.

The episode, which aired last night (29 April), featured the station’s ship, Ross Revenge, currently located on the Blackwater Estuary in Essex.

During the segment, presenter Michael Portillo was on board and immersed himself in the world of offshore radio.

He observed a training day for young DJs, tried his hand at playing records, jingles and making on-air announcements, under the guidance of the station’s newest recruit, 17-year-old Ellie Boyce.

Station manager Peter Moore was also interviewed on the bridge of the vessel, sharing insights into the history of Radio Caroline.

“The broadcast has clearly resonated with viewers, sparking a renewed interest in the station,” Peter Moore commented: “We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and interest received since the programme was aired.

“We have received an avalanche of emails and messages from former listeners across the decades who didn’t realise Radio Caroline was still broadcasting and who are delighted to have found us again.

“We also had lots of contact from people who went on to search Radio Caroline on the internet after the show and liked what they heard.”
