Radio Winchcombe has been found in breach of its licence by Ofcom for the broadcast of offensive language.
The community station, based in the Cotswolds, played the song “Homesick” by Noah Kahan & Sam Fender in the 5pm during The Weekend Show with Bev and Ros, co-hosted by Bev Harrell and Ros Martin.
The track contained a single use of the F word, which Ofcom determined was in breach of Rule 1.14 of the Broadcasting Code, as it was aired at a time when children were particularly likely to be listening.
The station acknowledged the oversight, explaining that the track had been played from a presenter’s personal CD collection and was not identified as containing offensive language before broadcast.
Radio Winchcombe apologised for the incident and confirmed that the track would not be played again. The station also stated that it would review its compliance measures to prevent future occurrences, despite already having robust policies in place.
Ofcom took the station’s response into account but ruled the broadcast was in breach of the Code.
While acknowledging the broadcaster’s commitment to compliance, Ofcom emphasised the need to ensure such language is avoided during times when children are likely to be listening.
Radio Winchcombe says it remains committed to serving its community and continues to take steps to uphold broadcasting standards.
