BBC offers first steps placements at Radio 5 Live News

The BBC is offering entry-level newsroom placements with the Radio 5 Live team in Salford, aimed at those who are new to journalism or looking to break into the industry.

Applications are now open for the First Steps: Radio 5 Live News Placements, a paid opportunity providing practical experience in a fast-paced national news environment. The scheme runs for two weeks in September and is part of the BBC’s broader strategy to make broadcasting careers more accessible.

Successful applicants will join the BBC team at MediaCityUK in Salford and work alongside journalists, producers and presenters contributing to the station’s national output. The opportunity is aimed at people without formal journalism training or experience but who have a strong interest in news, current affairs and storytelling.

The BBC is specifically encouraging applications from people from underrepresented backgrounds in broadcasting, including those from different ethnic groups, working-class communities and people with disabilities.

BBC Radio 5 Live is known for its news, sport and phone-in programming and broadcasts nationally on DAB, digital TV, online and smart speakers.

Applications close on Sunday 2 June 2025 at 11.59pm.

More information and how to apply is available at: careers.bbc.co.uk.
