Island FM has produced a new radio programme exploring the Nazi occupation of Alderney during World War Two.
Dark Waters, Alderney’s Nazi Atrocities focuses on the independent expert review launched by Lord Eric Pickles in July 2023.
The review brought together a panel of historians to examine German wartime records held in archives across the world, with the aim of finding out how many slave labourers were sent to Alderney and how many died due to poor conditions and violence.
The programme also examines why those responsible for the atrocities were never prosecuted.
Island FM’s Senior Journalist Euan Mahy, who followed the enquiry closely, created and presented the programme.
Euan Mahy said, “The moment I heard about the Pickles Review I knew that it was a story well worth following and telling. Dark Waters introduces the listener to those on the panel and relates how they gathered hard facts to counter these myths.”
Guernsey historian Tim Osborne also features in the podcast, sharing his research into members of the SS who ran the labour camps.
James Keen, Managing Director of Island FM, said, “Euan has used his in depth knowledge of Alderney during the war to tell a truly compelling story. It is factual and multi-dimensional and takes the listener into an unfamiliar and chilling chapter of Alderney’s past.”
Dark Waters will be broadcast at 6pm today on Island FM and is also available on Apple Podcasts and the Island FM website.
