The radio industry awards aren’t what they used to be

The radio industry awards aren’t what they used to be – that’s the opinion of many attending the Audio and Radio Industry Awards this week.

Not so very long ago, the entire radio industry took part in the ARIAS’ predecessor, The Sonys – an epic annual celebration at Grosvenor House in London.

There was music and entertainment from multiple bands, both established and up-and-coming artists eager to impress the room.

There was a live stream for those who couldn’t attend. Everyone in the industry entered – even Global. There was food: a three-course meal with endless wine and champagne.

Every radio CEO attended.

Everyone wanted to win.

Everyone wanted to enter.

And you could guarantee that all the winners were radio people and radio stations.

The ARIAS, while still a much-needed celebration of radio, lacks the sparkle and involvement the radio industry deserves. Sure, there was a paparazzi filled red carpet, but it was strictly reserved for invited VIPs rather than the real stars of the night.

Chris Moyles called it “the Fake Radio Awards” the next morning on his Radio X breakfast show. Greg James even pleaded for Global to return and be part of the event when handing out an award.

“It was nice to see Global,” Greg quipped – referring to the company’s Leicester Square HQ next door-but-one. But also nice to see a message from them wishing everyone good luck. Top trolling.

The Radio Academy has welcomed podcasters to take part, meaning the radio industry no longer has its own dedicated event.

Some might say “it’s all audio”, but you don’t see many radio stations at the Podcast Awards.

Times change, circumstances change, and the radio industry is constantly evolving – but the need for a united radio awards event for all sectors of the industry remains.

Meanwhile, here are some photos from the RadioToday Carpet:
