BBC to close Radio Jersey and Radio Guernsey MW transmitters
BBC Radio Jersey and BBC Radio Guernsey will stop broadcasting on medium wave from 31 March 2026.
In an FAQ published alongside the announcement, the BBC said it had reviewed coverage across FM, MW and digital platforms, identifying duplication between medium wave and other services following the roll-out of DAB across the islands in 2021.
It added that medium wave transmitters are “unlikely to be value for money in the longer term”.
The corporation said newer platforms provide an improved listening experience and confirmed the medium wave estate will continue to be reviewed periodically.
Coverage of the States of Deliberation will remain available on BBC Guernsey Extra on DAB and through the States of Deliberation website.
BBC Radio Jersey will continue on 88.8 FM, DAB, Freeview channel 711, online and via BBC Sounds and smart speakers.
The BBC has been turned off AM services across the UK over the last few years, especially in the local radio network. BBC Radio 5 Live is expected to lose its AM network in the next couple of years too.
