BBC unveils The Music is Black inspired by new exhibition

A range of BBC radio programmes will mark 125 years of black music in the UK.

The output forms part of a wider season also across TV, BBC Sounds and iPlayer, inspired by a new exhibition at V&A East Museum.

Highlights include The Music is Black on BBC Radio 2 at Hackney Empire, featuring Chineke! Orchestra and the LJ Singers, directed by Chris Cameron, with a mix of genres including funk, soul and UK garage alongside guest appearances.

BBC Radio 6 Music will run Rave Forever specials every Friday in August, focusing on black music scenes and dancefloor culture, while presenters Jamz Supernova and SHERELLE will host guests to reflect on black British music from the 1980s to today.

Radio 1Xtra will feature a DJ mixtape curated by Shortee Blitz and Beat A Maxx, celebrating a century of black music in the UK, alongside additional content on BBC iPlayer.

BBC Radio 4 will broadcast a gospel performance by the London Community Gospel Choir for Daily Service, recorded at V&A East Storehouse for Black History Month.

Radio 3 will also contribute with a new commission and a three-part Music Matters series focusing on black British composers and performers.

Lorna Clarke said: “BBC Music is committed to showcasing and supporting the widest possible breadth of British music.  We are pleased to be collaborating with V&A East Museum on this significant project.”
