Caroline revives Mi Amigo sound live this weekend
One last offshore reunion will put Radio Caroline’s late 1970s sound back on the air this weekend.
Radio Caroline is handing control of Ross Revenge to presenters and crew linked to Mi Amigo for a three day live broadcast from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 March.
The station says the programmes will recreate the style of its album based output from 1976 to early 1980, before Mi Amigo was lost in a storm.
The broadcast will come from Ross Revenge on the Blackwater Estuary, with listening available on 648 AM, 1368 AM and online.
Among those involved are Nick Richards and Tom Anderson, who were rescued by lifeboat shortly before Mi Amigo sank. Nick is travelling from Ireland to take part and said: “I had to take the opportunity to remember the much loved ship which gave me my start in radio”.
Marc Jacobs and Rob Hudson, who were part of Radio Caroline’s Dutch service in the 1970s, are also due on board. Tom will join remotely because of ill health.
Broadcast organiser Stevie Lane said the weekend would revisit music that Caroline backed when much of it was not getting support elsewhere. Station manager Peter Moore added that “we all knew that Mi Amigo was on borrowed time”.
Peter said the event will also draw attention to fundraising for structural repairs needed to secure the future of Ross Revenge.
