Andy Kershaw dies aged 66 after illness

Former BBC Radio 1 presenter Andy Kershaw has died aged 66 after being diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

His family confirmed he died at around 7.30pm on Thursday, following a diagnosis announced in January that also left him unable to walk.

Andy spent 15 years at BBC Radio 1 from 1985, and went on to reporting for BBC Radio 4, covering both music and major global events including the 1994 Rwanda genocide, and later contributed to BBC Radio 3.

He also appeared on television, presenting The Old Grey Whistle Test and contributing to BBC coverage of Live Aid in 1985.

Born in Rochdale in 1959, Andy began his career at Radio Aire in Leeds before moving into national broadcasting. His later work included the Radio 3 series Music Planet, which explored music recorded in remote locations around the world.

Reflecting his approach to broadcasting, he once said: “We’re not here to give the public what it wants. We’re here to give the public what it didn’t know it wanted”.
