Radio X listeners name greatest 500 British songs ever
Oasis have been voted the greatest British song of all time by Radio X listeners.
The band’s 1994 track Live Forever took the top spot as the station expanded its Best of British poll to 500 songs for the first time, with the full countdown airing across the Easter bank holiday weekend.
For a decade, Radio X has asked listeners to vote for their favourite British tracks, but this year marked the first time the list extended beyond 100 entries, drawing on music played across its sister stations including Radio X Classic Rock, Radio X 00s, Radio X 90s and Radio X Chilled.
Queen secured second place for the third year running with Bohemian Rhapsody, while The Stone Roses moved up to third with I Am The Resurrection. Oasis also took fourth and fifth places with Slide Away and Champagne Supernova.
Fleetwood Mac entered the top ten for the first time, with The Chain placing ninth following the inclusion of more classic rock tracks. Ozzy Osbourne’s influence was also reflected, with solo material and Black Sabbath’s Paranoid appearing in the list.
Wolf Alice achieved the highest new entry, with The Sofa at 21, alongside two further tracks in the top 100.
London was the most represented city, accounting for 148 songs from 39 artists, while Manchester followed with 91 songs from 14 acts. Music from the 1990s made up more than a quarter of the list.
Matt Deverson said: “For the first time, they’ve ranked their 500 favourite British songs in order of greatness, and the result is a landmark countdown.”
