Moyles carries Olympic torch in Aberystwyth

Radio 1 breakfast show presenter Chris Moyles has taken part in the 2012 Olympic Torch relay as the flame was carried through Aberystwyth in west Wales this morning.

The show came live from the town after the team had been following the progress of the torch over the first week and a half of its journey around the UK each morning.

Moyles disappeared from the studios just after 8.30am, with ‘Comedy’ Dave Vitty and sports news presenter Tina Daheley taking over in the Welsh town. News presenter Dominic Byrne was back in the London studio wondering where Chris had disappeared to. Producer Aled Hayden-Jones was out on the streets following the torch in his home town, Aberystwyth, and when he saw Chris coming down the road towards him he expressed his shock to the team live on air.

It’s understood the whole thing had been pre-planned but was kept a surprise from listeners and members of the Radio 1 team.

Chris returned to the studio just after 9am and told listeers: “I feel very honoured. That is such a huge achievement. The fact that I got to run with it, I felt so proud. Everyone was waving and cheering.”

On Friday, Capital FM South Wales presenter Kam Kelly took part in the Cardiff leg of the torch relay. Chris Moyles’ Radio 1 colleague Fearne Cotton also carried the torch on stage at the station’s live event in Torbay nine days ago.
