5 live hires heavyweight boxing champion

Lennox Lewis is joining BBC Radio 5 live’s Olympic commentary team for London 2012.

He’ll join fellow sportsmen including James Cracknell, Darren Campbell, Steve Backley and Kriss Akabusi as part of the station’s Olympic coverage.

Lewis will commentate on boxing for 5 live and the digital radio station for the Games, 5 live Olympics Extra. He said: “I’m so excited about London 2012 and can’t wait to get there and see it all get started. I’m delighted to be working with BBC Radio 5 live through the Olympics.”

The new service for the Games Radio 5 live Olympics Extra will start broadcasting on Wednesday July 25th 2012 on digital radio, Freeview and online. It will offer extended commentary and a catch-up service through the night so that Radio 5 live and 5 live Olympics Extra together will allow listeners to follow the games 24-hours a day.

Across both Radio 5 live and Radio 5 live Olympics Extra there will be 580 hours of live commentary alongside 170 hours of highlights over the Games period. Mark Pougatch, who has broadcast at four Summer Olympics, leads the 5 live coverage from London during the Games.

SCHEDULE

From Friday July 27th 2012 throughout the Olympic Games the schedule on BBC Radio 5 live will be:

6-10am – 5 live Breakfast with Nicky Campbell and Rachel Burden

10am-2pm – Victoria Derbyshire and Mark Chapman

2-6.30pm – Peter Allen and Colin Murray

6.30–10.30pm – Mark Pougatch

10.30pm-1am – Tony Livesey will gauge reaction to the games from all over the UK

On 5 live Olympics extra Ian Payne and Anna Foster will broadcast live between 10am and Midnight (approximately).
