BBC Radio 1 drive-time host Greg James says he would like to host the breakfast show on the station.
But he doesn’t want his colleague and friend Chris Moyles to get the sack.
He told the Mirror newspaper he’d be mad not to want to do it at some point: “It’s the flagship show and the one the rest of the station sort of follows.”
The paper’s sources say he is next in line to take over – maybe when Moyles’ curent contract ends in 2014. Greg says: “Me and Chris hang out, everyone at the station gets on well really. It can be competitive, secretly, but not in a destructive way.
“I’ve been honest in saying I’d like to do it – but that really doesn’t mean I want to see Chris sacked tomorrow.
“It is competitive, but then it should be – I should be pressured to be as good as I can be every day because there’s always someone else who wants to do it.
“I keep a diary at the end of each year and write about the good things that have happened during the year – I’m starting to sound like Adrian b****y Mole or something now aren’t I? But it’s just a bit of a thing I do.”
