5 live teams up with BBC Radio Sheffield

BBC Radio 5 live and Radio Sheffield will be covering Octoberfest 2012 – a free three-day local festival.

In partnership with the local station and other parts of the BBC including CBeebies, CBBC, Radio 3 and 6 Music, 5 live will bring news and sport programming, audience debates and interactive activities in venues across the city.

Some of the station’s presenters including Nicky Campbell, Shelagh Fogarty, Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode, Stephen Nolan, Robbie Savage and Colin Murray will be attending to lead the discussions and to get involved with the action.

One highlight of the festival will be ‘5 live Aside’, which will see the station attempting to break the Guinness World Records title for the most players in a 5-a-side exhibition football match. Taking place over a 24-hour period 5 live will be hoping to beat the current record, which stands at 441, with donations from the challenge going to BBC Children In Need.

The world record attempt will take place from 2pm Friday 12 October to 2pm Saturday 13 October at the indoor pitches at the Sheffield United Academy and will be completed under the watchful eye of a Guinness World Records adjudicator.

Other programmes to be broadcast from the festival includes a live edition of Fighting Talk, with Colin Murray (ala Radio Festival 2007) 606 with Robbie Savage and Jason Roberts, Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode’s Film Review and Al Murray presenting 7 Day Sunday.

Commenting on the festival, 5 live Controller, Adrian Van Klaveren says: “Sheffield 2012 will be our third Octoberfest and it’s even more ambitious than ever before. For three days we will join our BBC Radio Sheffield colleagues to deliver a fantastic schedule of live broadcasts from some of the city’s best known landmarks.

“Taking 5 live on the road, right to the heart of our audience, is always an exciting prospect and something that we really enjoy. We’re working with a lot of partners across the BBC and beyond to make sure Octoberfest 2012 captures the very best of what 5 live and Sheffield have to offer.”

Talking about Octoberfest 2012, BBC Radio Sheffield Editor, Martyn Weston says: “I’m delighted to welcome our 5 live colleagues to Sheffield. Octoberfest is a real opportunity for people to join in with topical debates on issues that really affect our city, while also taking the advantage of coming along to have some fun and to get to know the teams from both 5 live and BBC Radio Sheffield.”
