5 live turns off AM transmitters in the North

BBC Radio 5 live has switched off its 909 medium wave frequency across the North of England for essential engineering work.

The frequency fell silent at 9am after the station announced the news to listeners in breakfast. “Stay with us but find a different way to listen” said co-host Rachel Burden.

The station also announced the news on social media, with a message on Twitter saying: “If you’re listening in north of England on 909 AM and we disappear, you can still find us at http://bbc.co.uk/5live”

There’s been no mention of how long the frequency will be off-air but 5 live says the station is also available on DAB, Digital TV, Smart Phone Apps and online.
