A number of Radio 1 programmes will be broadcast from the BBC Academy event at the station’s Big Weekend in Derry~Londonderry again this year.
Radio 1 will broadcast daily live shows highlighting the work of the young people attending. Presenters including Phil Taggart, Huw Stephens, Zane Lowe and Greg James as well as Nick Grimshaw who will be finishing his Radio 1 Breakfast Show Tour in the venue on Monday 13 May.
Phil Taggart and Alice Levine will also broadcast their 10pm–midnight show live from BBC Radio Foyle Monday – Wednesday and from the Academy on Thursday evening.
The Academy will also play host to the return of Radio 1’s Big Conversation. Hosts Nihal and Tina Daheley will be joined by young voices from the area to debate the key issues that are affecting them. They will talk about the hopes and dreams of a young UK, ask what does the future look like and what needs to be done to make their lives better.
The Script, Wretch 32, Gabrielle Aplin and EastEnders are also confirmed to take part in BBC Radio 1’s Academy – inspiring young people across the area.
The Radio 1 Academy is a programme of social action and outreach activity, offering up to 5500 places for young people across Derry~Londonderry and beyond. Those attending will get the chance to gain skills and experience and to attend inspirational talks by industry professionals and successful individuals.
During the week long Academy there will be a number of practical hands on workshops including DJ Skills – how to improve your performance on stage; how to make a Newsbeat radio bulletin; practical workshops in stage management, event planning and promotion; build beats and mix music for Radio 1; EastEnders – scriptwriting workshops; and 6Degrees – directing masterclass with production and actors from the series.
There will also be a number of panels taking place, with highlights including how to make music that breaks you into the big league; how to break into radio; behind the scenes in TV production; how to make your business work for you and make money; and how Radio 1’s Big Weekend happens – roles in event management.
Some influential names in music and entertainment will also be getting involved in Q&A sessions at the Academy including The Script, Wretch 32, Gabrielle Aplin and EastEnders.
