Global Radio’s LBC 97.3 has raised £100,246 for the charity Help for Heroes after a week of special programming and fundraising.
Along with text and online donations, the money was raised through a host of exclusive auction lots. They included £6,600 for a unique Hublot men’s watch, £5,000 for a luxury six-night holiday to Jordan with business class flights and £2,750 for the ultimate foodie prize with LBC 97.3 presenter James O’Brien.
One of the final auction items, which helped push the total beyond £100,000, was a pair of Help for Heroes pants signed by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
The LBC 97.3 Charity Appeal week culminated in the Hero Ride, a sponsored 10-mile bike ride across London on Sunday. LBC 97.3 broadcast live from the event with breakfast host Nick Ferrari reporting from the finish line on The Mall.
After the grand total was announced on Nick Ferrari at Breakfast, Help for Heroes’ Co-Founder Bryn Parry said: “This is extraordinary. Thank you so much… I was really struck riding from Blackheath back down to Horse Guards (Parade) that the community stood and waved us on. We were going through every ethnic community and what we were seeing was multi-cultural London out there on the streets supporting our men and women of the Armed Forces. It was really powerful.”
LBC 97.3’s Managing Editor James Rea told RadioToday: “The £100,246 will improve the lives of our brave servicemen and women across the UK, so on their behalf, we’d like to say a big thank you to our listeners for their incredible generosity and making our 2013 Appeal such a success.”
The money will be used to support veterans and current military personnel who have been wounded or injured as a result of serving their country.
