BBC local radio specialist music show Stereo Underground to leave the BBC

Stereo Underground, BBC Radio Solent’s weekly indie and alternative music show, is coming to an end on the BBC and going independent.

The programme, presented by Richard Latto, was recently recommissioned amidst the local radio changes, but is now heading in a new direction.

Announcing the changes on-air, Richard said the move was because of schedule changes across local radio stations in the south.

Stereo Underground’s Development Producer Sabina Latto confirmed to RadioToday: “31st January will be the last edition of Stereo Underground broadcast on the BBC and available on BBC Sounds.

“We will be available on a new app, Mixcloud, in association with live events organiser Planet Of The Tapes who have some exciting plans for us featuring the biggest guests and dedicated rewards for the show’s loyal listenership.”

“We thank the BBC for the ten years of support and this opportunity to build on the exponential growth Stereo Underground has enjoyed on BBC Sounds and hopefully tempt our fans to come with us on an exciting new adventure.

“There is so much love and support for the show from listeners, particularly as the music and shared storytelling has helped so many people bond over their indie experiences.”

Stereo Underground launched on BBC Radio Solent in June 2014 and was soon syndicated on eight BBC local radio statons across the south of the British Isles. Over the years Stereo Underground guests have included Noel Gallagher, Shirley Manson and Johnny Marr.

A new podcast of the show’s in-depth interviews is also in the works with C60 Media.

Thanking the listeners to Stereo Underground, presenter Richard Latto said: “They have been a tremendous support on-air and on social media during its ten years on the BBC. I hope that relationship continues as we work together to independently build the brand with a music community that unites young and old who are alternative at heart.”

Any radio station interested in syndicating the show free of charge should email latto@stereounderground.co.uk.

The BBC has not responded to a request for a comment when asked by RadioToday regarding this and the remaining specialist shows on BBC Local Radio.
