Bauer Media Audio is launching a long-term programme of support for aspiring journalists that, for the first time, will be available all across the UK.
The Bauer Media Audio News Mentoring Programme offers guidance and training to students in their final year, who hope to make the next step in becoming professional broadcast journalists.
Following a thorough selection process, students are matched with suitable mentors from across the group who they will talk to regularly through the year.
Students are given the opportunity to expand their networks and develop their skills with a two-week placement in a newsroom of their choice. They are also invited to further events and masterclasses through the year which complement their studies and enhance their knowledge of the broadcast sector.
Head of News & Sport (England&Wales) for Bauer Media Audio UK, Jim Foulger said: ‘The mentoring programme is a huge success story, offering a clear route from university to employment within the broadcast industry. This year we have welcomed more mentees than ever before into Bauer Media Audio journalism jobs across the UK. Being chosen to be part of our next cohort is truly one of the fastest ways to move from studies to the studio.’
Head of the mentoring programme and a Senior News Editor for Bauer Media Audio UK, Louise Easton said: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get that very valuable foot in the door to their dream job. The advice and training we provide gives them a solid base to launch their career in broadcast journalism and it’s such a great opportunity to make key contacts and an excellent first impression.
“It is a privilege to be able to work with the next generation of talent and I’ve been so impressed with the standard of mentees over the years. I secured my first ever job through work experience and I, along with those Mentors who volunteer to be part of this programme, recognise the value it has.
“I believe this mentoring programme is the perfect introduction into a Bauer newsroom and I’m delighted that we have been able to expand it to offer this support to even more people.’
Amelia Salmons has just completed the 2024 programme and is now working as a multi-media news and sport reporter across the Midlands: ‘This has been a very valuable experience. Journalists at Bauer are some of the most hardworking people I’ve met. They have taught me great skills that I know now are vital to learn at the start of your career- as you don’t want to pick up bad habits early on.
“They work hard and are dedicated to telling stories that matter. As this is an exclusive scheme, they take work experience seriously. You aren’t made to make tea and they spend time getting to know you as a person too and what you’d like to achieve. I couldn’t recommend this scheme enough!”
Frances Wall also secured a permanent position at Bauer after completing the 2024 programme: ‘I had never stepped foot in a professional radio station before this programme and once I did I haven’t looked back. I have learnt so much from my journey with Bauer. The variety of tasks the teams prepare for you really helps you navigate the fast-paced environment of the newsroom.
“My editing, interviewing and bulletin reading skills have massively improved whilst working with teams in Manchester and Birmingham. My confidence didn’t stop there as I also had the opportunity to have regular meetings with my mentor which really helped me prepare for work experience and enhance my skills in radio.’
