BBC Radio 2 to repeat Wogan tribute marking ten years since his death

BBC Radio 2 is repeating its special programme Wogan: In His Own Words to commemorate Terry Wogan’s passing on 31st January 2016.

The programme marks ten years since the death of Sir Terry with another chance to hear the interview recorded in the 1980s, reflecting on a broadcasting career that shaped decades of BBC radio and television.

In the recording, Terry talks openly about his family, the personal choices he made throughout his career and the work ethic that underpinned his long-running success, beginning with his first BBC Radio 2 breakfast show in April 1972.

He also reflects on his television career, including Come Dancing, Blankety Blank and a series of beauty contests, alongside his thoughts on the fragility of fame and the anxiety that can come with being constantly in the public eye.

Terry’s original words are revisited through contributions from colleagues and friends, who share their immediate reactions as they listen back to the interview years later, as well as personal memories and advice they received from him during their own careers.

The two-hour programme is hosted by Zoe Ball, who describes the show as an intimate portrait of a broadcaster whose intelligence, wit and warmth made him one of the most recognisable voices in British broadcasting.

Zoe says: “Terry was the greatest of all time. I like everyone else, absolutely adored him. He made every listener feel he was talking just to them. So naturally gifted, hilarious, naughty, inclusive and had such empathy.”

Contributors include Dame Joanna Lumley, Patrick Duffy, Gaby Roslin, Claudia Winkleman, Fearne Cotton, Scott Mills, Dermot O’Leary, Greg James and Michael Ball.

This extended repeat also features additional material from Terry’s conversation, longer clips from a Brighton outside broadcast, and further contributions from former BBC Director General Greg Dyke, Blankety Blank guest Lorraine Chase and excerpts from Chris Evans, recorded at the Westminster Abbey Service of Thanksgiving in September 2016.

Wogan: In His Own Words was first broadcast in 2022 and airs on BBC Radio 2 from 2am to 4am on Saturday 31st January.
