Six presenters exit BBC Radio 1 ahead of schedule changes

Daytime programming changes are coming to BBC Radio 1 as six presenters are set to depart.

Rickie and Melvin will leave Radio 1 after seven years, along with Dean McCullough, Nat O’Leary, James Cusack and Swarzy.

This means new presenters for early breakfast, mid-mornings and weekend breakfast.

Mylo and Rosie will take over weekday Early Breakfast every day from 4am until 7am, having first appeared through Radio 1’s presenter development initiative in 2025, and previously a big hit in West Yorkshire on Pulse 1.

Charlie Hedges and Jeremiah Asiamah will host Radio 1’s Live Lounge from September, weekday mornings from 10.30am and 1pm.

Charlie said she and Jeremiah could bring a chaotic energy to the programme, while also sending her “love and respect” to Rickie and Melvin.

Jeremiah described the appointment as a full circle moment after listening to the Live Lounge while travelling home from college in 2017.

Rickie and Melvin will leave Radio 1 after seven years, along with Dean McCullough, Nat O’Leary, James Cusack and Swarzy.

Rickie and Melvin said: “Presenting on the station has been an unforgettable experience, and we are incredibly grateful to the entire team and, most importantly, our brilliant listeners.”

Vicky Hawkesworth will be joined by Charley Marlowe between 10.30am and 1pm from Friday to Sunday, while Emil Franchi becomes the presenter of Weekend Breakfast.

Lauren Layfield will host The Official Chart: First Look from Birmingham each Sunday between 4pm and 7pm. It will be the first Radio 1 programme of its kind to come live from the city.

GK Barry will also present a series of Radio 1 programmes during the year, beginning with a six-week run from 10 September at 1pm.

Sunday evenings will include Shanequa Paris and Oré Olukoga on Life Hacks, followed by Sian Eleri’s Chillest Show. Alyx Holcombe’s Indie Show moves to Tuesdays at 11pm.

The station’s new presenter showcase will move from Friday Early Breakfast to weekend mornings between 6am and 7am.

Mylo and Rosie say: “It’s really hard to put this feeling into words. Elated doesn’t quite cover it. We are two best friends who have shared a childhood dream of one day working at Radio 1 and we can’t quite believe it’s become a reality. We don’t think it’s sunk in yet, will it ever? The listeners of Radio 1 have welcomed us to the family with open arms and to have our own show and be able to talk to them every morning on Early Breakfast means more to us than they will ever know.”

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, says: “Charlie and Jerry taking the reins of Radio 1’s Live Lounge marks an exciting new chapter. I can’t wait for listeners to experience the energy, chemistry and unpredictability they’ll bring to one of the station’s most iconic shows.

“We’re also delighted to welcome GK Barry and Charley Marlowe to brand-new programmes on the network, where they’ll each bring their own unmistakable humour, personality and wit. I love that The Official Chart: First Look becomes its own show and as a first for Radio 1, will be coming live from Birmingham, hosted by the brilliant Lauren Layfield. Mylo and Rosie will be the perfect soundtrack to the early mornings, and Emil Franchi takes over Weekend Breakfast with the warmth and energy that makes him such a natural fit.

“The new schedule brings together the world’s best DJs with the very best new music from the UK and beyond – and it all starts this September.”
