1Xtra marks 60 years of Notting Hill Carnival

BBC Radio 1Xtra will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival with special programming and live coverage.

In the weeks leading up to the event, the station will feature shows reflecting Carnival’s music, culture and community, with bespoke on-air and on-demand content.

This will include exclusive interviews, Carnival mixes, and archive material available on BBC Sounds. A new documentary, 1Xtra Presents Notting Hill Carnival at 60 with Richie Brave, is now available on BBC Sounds.

The programme explores Carnival’s key themes, from vendors and costume designers to sound system operators and organisers, highlighting its impact on music and community.

Key interviews from the documentary will also be previewed in 1Xtra Talks with Richie Brave throughout August.

From 3rd August, presenters Nadia Jae and Remi Burgz will explore different aspects of Carnival, with Nadia learning about costumes and Remi taking up the steel pans.

Both will share their experiences on air, leading up to final showcases during Carnival week. Special guests, including artists and organisers, will join shows across 1Xtra from 10 August.

The Rampage show will feature four countdown programmes, and Remi Burgz will host Carnival Live Lounges with performances from scene stars.

Over the Bank Holiday, 1Xtra will broadcast highlights from festivals and carnivals across the UK, culminating in live coverage from Notting Hill Carnival on 31st August.
