BBC Asian Network listeners helped set a Guinness World Records title in a pakora dunking relay broadcast live from Birmingham.
More than 250 people gathered at The Old Library on Wednesday 23 September for the attempt organised by BBC Asian Network Breakfast with Nikita Kanda. Guinness World Records adjudicator Will Munford verified the title for the longest relay of people dunking pakoras.
Participants formed a continuous line. Each person dunked a pakora into the next participant’s chutney, ate it and passed the challenge along. The result was captured during Jaz Singh’s show on Asian Network.
Nikita was joined by listeners, BBC presenters and guests including Radio 2’s OJ Borg, Coronation Street actor Ellie Leach, world record holder Preet Chandi and comedian Lindsey Santoro.
Nikita said setting a Guinness World Records title was something she had wanted to do since childhood. “To now have the chance to set a brand-new record alongside the Asian Network listeners is very special.”
The station also held Mix, Meet and Mentor at the event. Its DJs, presenters and production staff answered questions and shared career advice with people aged 18 to 34 interested in radio, audio and music.
Ahmed Hussain, Head of BBC Asian Network, said: “Yes, we’ve broken a world record, but more importantly we’ve brought people together.”
