LW listeners miss Ashes win

Listeners to Radio 4 on Long Wave missed out on hearing one of the most important moments in English cricket history this morning.

The station switched from live Ashes coverage to its daily Shipping Forecast, during which England wrapped up a win over Australia to win the urn down under for the first time in 24 years.

Radio 4 LW is the only analogue station to broadcast full coverage of the Ashes, although Test Match Special also airs on digital station BBC Five Live Sports Extra.

Even the Radio 4 Today Programme [link=http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9347000/9347990.stm]highlighted the blunder[/link], with the audio clip played demonstrating that the commentary team in Sydney predicted that the match would end during the Shipping Forecast but that they could do nothing about it.
