Mayo & Kermode mark 10 years

BBC Radio 5 Live is to celebrate a decade of its film review strand with Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode with an outside broadcast, as two special editions and a programme featuring their best bits.

The pair won the Sony Gold for Speech Programme in 2009 and Mark was also named best Specialist Contributor at last year’s awards.

Next Friday the Film Review slot will mark it’s 10th anniversary with a show from East Finchley’s Phoenix Cinema, with a live audience and special guest, Noel Clarke, the celebrated actor and producer of the films Kidulthood and Adulthood. Then on Bank Holiday Monday, film star Hugh Bonneville hosts a special programme looking at the funniest and most entertaining moments from a decade of Kermode and Mayo.

The following Friday there’ll be a special edition featuring some famous fans of the programme including Stephen Fry, movie director Paul Greengrass, Jason Isaacs and Michael Sheen. Then on Friday 10 June the show comes from 5 Live’s new home in Media City Salford. Mark and Simon’s “guests” will be the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, who will play extracts from some of the greatest film scores of all time. To help finalise the running order, listeners have been asked to choose in a text vote between Jaws and Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

Mark Kermode said: “After 10 years of doing the film review with Simon Mayo I continue to enjoy explaining to him and the listeners why they are wrong! I plan to carry on doing so for another 10 years.”

Simon Mayo said: “After 10 years of doing the film review film review with Mark Kermode I continue to be baffled by everything he says. The plan is to be baffled for another 10 years.”

Simon and Mark’s partnership reviewing film stretches back some 20 years to Simon’s BBC Radio 1 show in the early 90s. When Simon joined Radio 5 Live in May 2001, Mark joined him for the film reviews which soon became a staple of Mayo’s afternoon weekday 5 Live programme. Mark opened his review with the words: “And another thing… ” and the seamless transition from Radio 1 was complete. Last year, the film review show was given its own space and doubled in length to two hours every Friday from 2-4pm on Radio 5 Live.
