Starting a radio station?

In this guide, we’ll provide the main elements you’ll need, and a few you might just want. Whilst starting a radio station today is so much easier than 20 years ago, there’s still lots to do to make sure you look right, sound right, and are fully legal.

From PRS to Playout Systems, from Logos to Headphones, we present a quick start guide to what you’ll need to do to get on-air.

Getting Started

It might seem obvious but your radio station name is one of the most important parts of starting a radio station. The good news is the name choosing part is free – but you need to make sure you’ve thought of a few points:

  • It’s original (check trademarks, domain names, companies house etc)
  • It does what it says (naming after a location or a music style is always a good start)
  • People know what it is a soon as they see it (The Bee could be anything – Bee Radio is better)
  • Usernames on social media, Twitter etc, are available for your new name
