GMG Rock the North East

GMG Radio are extending their Rock Radio brand with the launch of an independent digital service across the north east.

From April 1st, Rock Radio will broadcast classic rock music on the MXR digital multiplex and will have a potential reach of two million listeners. Based in Gateshead, the station is aimed at the 35+ market.
The service will not be a simulcast of Rock Radio in Glasgow or the upcoming service for the North West, but will feature presenters and local news originating in the north east.
John Myers, chief executive of GMG Radio, said: “The Rock Radio brand is reaching an audience previously under-catered for in the industry. These listeners are passionate about their music and Rock Radio reflects this passion with great music and presenters who really know their stuff."
It will be the group’s second station to launch under the Rock Radio brand after its sister station in Glasgow began back in January 2007. A third Rock Radio will launch in Greater Manchester in May.
The announcement comes just days after GCap announced their intention to close national DAB station Planet Rock.
