BBC double for radio at Freesat Awards

BBC Radio 1 Xtra has been named Best Digital Radio Channel the 2012 Freesat Awards.

Radio 5 live, meanwhile, picked up the prize for Best News Channel – beating a handful of television channels to the award.

Other nominees up against 5 live were Al Jazeera English, the BBC News Channel and CNN. The judges said: “BBC Radio 5 Live was the clear winner in this category – a channel which we all felt was ‘agile, quick and intelligent’, and with some of the best presenters around.”

1Xtra fought off competition from BBC Radio 6 Music and Planet Rock for their award. The judges said: “1Xtra breaks talent that no-one else will. Without them we wouldn’t have Plan B or N’Dubz.”

Last year’s Best Digital Radio Channel winner was Absolute Radio, while in 2010 the winner was Absolute 80s. 5 live was also ‘highly commended’ at last year’s awards in the News Event Coverage of the Year category for its coverage of the General Election.
