5 live hires Donovan Bailey for athletics

Track and Field record holder Donovan Bailey is joining the 5 live commentary team for the London Anniversary Games and World Athletics Championships.

Bailey is a former holder of the men’s 100 metres world record and he won Olympic gold for Canada at the 1996 games in Atlanta.

Bailey will join the 5 live team in Stratford, led by the BBC’s Athletics correspondent Mike Costello and also including presenter Mark Pougatch, experts Allison Curbishley and Steve Backley, and reporter Sonja McLaughlan.

Donovan Bailey says “The UK has always been like a second home for me – I’ve had some of my greatest moments on the track there and I’m looking forward to an amazing summer with the BBC”

Jonathan Wall, Controller BBC Radio 5 live said: “We are delighted to welcome Donovan to the BBC Radio 5 live team. He’s one of track and field’s legendary figures and will add to our already strong line-up. This is a big year for the sport with the World Championships coming up next month and we are keen to deliver the very best commentary we can.

“I’m also delighted one of the stars of the BBC’s Oympics and Paralympics coverage Tanni Grey Thompson will be back behind the mic for the IPC World Athletics Championships.”
