As a tribute to the late Betty Smith, BBC Radio Humberside is planning to run a one-off repeat of a Beryl and Betty Show.
The show in question will be the one which ran the weekend after the girls won their Sony Radio Academy Gold Award. The programme, with co-host David Reeves, has been re-mastered and will air this Saturday at 6pm.
It features their recollections of being manhandled onto the stage by Robbie Savage and Chris Evans and the saga of the chewy steak at the awards do! There’s also a chance to live again their rendition of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”.
Simon Pattern, BBC Radio Humberside Editor told RadioToday: “Having listened again to the team – for the first time in almost two years – it’s just a wonderful reminder of why “people led” radio is so special.
“We’ve been told this week by Betty’s family that the 6 years she spent visiting our studios, along with Beryl, were some of the happiest of her life. I’m not sure that Betty ever really realised that the team here enjoyed those times just as much – the line of presenters and reporters queuing up to have their knees “felt” was always long… even the then Chairman of the BBC Trust, Lord Patten was keen to join in!”
