Star Radio North East saved from closure
Star Radio North East owner UKRD has reached an agreement with View TV Group to transfer ownership of the radio station.
RadioToday revealed on Monday this week that the station would close within days, but in an interview, UKRD CEO William Rogers said he was open to offers to buy the station. This resulted in a number of people making contact to discuss the sale.
“We have been working incredibly hard over the last few days to try and make sure a sale took place which, as far as possible, secures the future of the station and those working there,” said William. “Both the teams from UKRD and View TV have burned the midnight oil to get this done and I’m delighted that a deal has been secured”.
A partnership between The View TV Group and radio operator and presenter, Darren Shortt, has been created to ensure the future of the radio station and they took control of the operations as of 31 st March. Darren currently works at Silk 106.9 in Cheshire and was most recently on Hi FM in Oman as breakfast presenter.
The new owners, Darren Shortt and Jamie Branson, have both expressed their delight at having the opportunity to run the operation and View TV Group Chairman, Jamie Branson, said that he was looking forward to working with the team to secure the station’s future. “It’s exciting times ahead for the existing team and the local area as we look forward to a successful future,” said Mr Branson.
Darren added, “We look forward to creating some amazing radio and bringing the area a fun and informative station the region can be very proud of”.
