Fearne and Reggie promoted

Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates have been promoted to become the new hosts of the weekend breakfast show, taking over from Spoony who will quit later this year. Fearne and Reggie will present the first of their new shows from late September 2006.

The BBC say they will be an integral part of an already star-studded weekend daytime schedule featuring Vernon Kay, Sara Cox, Trevor Nelson and Radio 1’s Chart Show with JK and Joel. The pair, who already host a show on Friday mornings (4.00-7.00am), joined Radio 1 in September 2005.

Fearne said: “I’m over the moon about Reggie and I getting this new show on Radio 1. I’ve had a fantastic time so far and know that it’s just going to get even better.” Reggie said: “Being a part of the weekend team at Radio 1 is really exciting, there is definitely a family feel at the station and I’m ready to meet the weekend in-laws!”

Ben Cooper, Head of Mainstream, Radio 1, said: “This is a key show for Radio 1 and Fearne and Reggie are total stars. “I believe we now have the best weekend line-up in music radio in the country. Spoony has done a great job for the station and with his passion for sport matching his passion for music he has got an amazing career ahead of him and we wish him all the best.”

He has recently extended his contract with BBC Radio Five Live to continue broadcasting the UK’s top-rated football phone-in show 606 as well as exploring other programme opportunities around his love of both golf and football.

Following on from being one of the final presenters of Top of the Pops, Spoony has a number of very exciting TV opportunities which he will be announcing shortly and – as befits a man of international status – will carry on his very successful DJ’ing career.
