A new book on managing radio stations has been published free-of-charge on the web, after a deal with a publisher fell through.
Managing Radio is a comprehensive practical guide to all the essential elements of managing radio stations. It covers the management of commercial, public service and community radio stations and the wide range of new DAB, online, web and independent production opportunities.
The book has three authors, including former TLRC manager Brian Lister who is now a visiting lecturer in radio production and management at the University of Sunderland. He explained to RadioToday.co.uk that the publication grew out of a collaborative project between three authors who have worked together on radio management courses for Sunderland University's successful MA in Radio Production and Management: “The book was originally commissioned by a major academic publisher, but when they pulled out earlier this year we decided to make the work freely available under a Creative Commons licence.”
The other two authors are Caroline Mitchell who is Senior Lecturer in Radio and a trainer and consultant in community media, and Dr. Anthony O'Shea, Senior Lecturer in Organisational Studies and Organisational Theory, both at the University of Sunderland.
The book can be viewed online or downloaded section-by-section in pdf format here.
