North East gets Pride Radio

Ahead of the Pride festival, Newcastle and Gateshead is to get Pride Radio for a month.

Broadcasting from office space donated by Eldon Square shopping centre between June 21st and July 17th, the station hopes to prove the demand is there for a full time community station.

The not-for-profit community station will cater for the LGBT community, 24 hours a day on 87.9FM in the Newcastle/Gateshead area, online at their website and via iPhone.

Pride Radio will feature well-known names from radio in the North East as well as personalities from the Newcastle gay scene. As well as music and events, the station will also broadcast news, weather and travel at breakfast and in the late afternoon.

A special show at the weekend featuring a former Powerhouse DJ hopes to bring back memories of the 80s and 90s. The iconic gay club was a focal point of Newcastle's gay scene at that time.

Tony Swinhoe, the station’s programme controller said: “We know there’s a demand for this service and we are sure our broadcast will be a success. The LGBT community is still under-represented on mainstream radio and TV and we hope to go some way to putting this right.”
